Your Weekly Guide to Artist and Business Development

One Marketing Resource...

Feeling overwhelmed by all the conflicting music marketing advice out there? We found a simple, straight-to-the-point guide from Christopher Wares, Berklee’s Assistant Chair of Music Business and Management, that breaks down exactly what independent artists need to do. His tips cover optimizing your online presence, creating a cohesive world around your release, crafting a social media plan, running digital ads, and pitching playlists strategically.

One Music Production Resource…

Ever wondered how Billie Eilish and Finneas crafted their Academy Award–winning song What Was I Made For from the Barbie soundtrack? Check out this Vanity Fair breakdown, where they pull back the curtain on their studio process, show the plug-ins they used, and reveal hidden production details you might not have noticed.

One Performance Idea...

As a performer, your job is to run the show. “Pulling focus” is a technique you can use anytime you need to snap the audience’s attention back to you, such as after a mistake, distraction, or busy stage moment. Used strategically, this technique can help you regain control of the stage and keep the audience fully engaged, no matter what is happening around you.

Try it out: As soon as you notice the audience’s attention drifting, do something bold and unmistakable. Jump, stomp, spin, or hit a powerful note. Make it fast and energetic so the audience can’t help but look.

One Business Tip...

A full-time artist manager helps shape your career by finding gigs, planning releases, building your brand, and advocating for you behind the scenes. If you’re just starting out, try asking a trusted friend or family member to act as a “mini manager” who can focus on scouting opportunities like gigs, festivals, or contests.

Try it out: Ask your “mini manager” to share opportunities with you and handle the application process. Agree on a fair percentage for every paying gig they help you land. This lightens your workload and gives your friend or family member a chance to earn some extra cash while supporting your music career.

One Songwriting Idea...

Transform your everyday life into lyrics by voice-recording interesting phrases you hear throughout your day. Listen back at night and highlight words or expressions that stand out, then build your next verse around these authentic snippets of real life.

Try it: Record while going for a walk or watching TV, and see what unexpected lyrical gems you discover!

See you next week!
