Your Weekly Guide to Artist and Business Development

One Marketing Resource...

Music is more than just sound. It is a tool for connection and change, and at FYR, it is our mission to help youth artists create music that leads to real impact. A recent case study by Venice Music explores how artists, both past and present, have used their songs to spark conversations, inspire communities, and drive social change. The study highlights the unique power of music to move hearts and minds, and reminds us that sharing your message thoughtfully through social media can amplify your impact.

One Songwriting Idea...

What if less actually gave you more? When you limit your choices, you sharpen your instincts. This week we’re encouraging you to try writing a chorus melody using only five notes. This will help you focus on the other essential elements like phrasing and emotional delivery. The most memorable melodies are powerful not because they’re complex, but because they’re intentional.

Try it out: Start by choosing a note in an unfamiliar key, and limit yourself to only the five notes above it. Explore different patterns, and let rhythm, phrasing, and spacing guide you. When you find something that feels right, record a quick voice note, then experiment with adding lyrics and chords. Let the limitation spark your creativity!

One Music Production Tip...

For independent artists, limited access to session musicians often means relying on VSTs to bring songs to life. Virtual instruments are powerful tools, but without intention they can sound flat or mechanical. A few small production choices can add depth, movement, and emotion that make a track feel more alive and authentic.

Try it out: Take one virtual instrument in your current session and adjust the velocity so every note is not hitting at the same intensity. Nudge a few notes slightly off the grid to create natural timing variation. Add light automation to dynamics or expression so the part evolves instead of repeating identically. Finally, add a touch of room reverb or subtle saturation to create space and warmth. Listen before and after and notice how small imperfections create a more human performance.

Pro-tip: Sometimes it is just as powerful to lean into the synthesized qualities of a VST and exaggerate them so they feel intentional.

See you next week!
