Your Weekly Guide to Artist and Business Development

One Songwriting Resource...

What do “California Gurls,” “Teenage Dream,” and “Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.)” all have in common besides Katy Perry? They were co-written by artist and songwriter Bonnie McKee. In this episode of Behind the Wall, she opens up about her journey as both a songwriter and an indie artist, how her approach to writing has evolved, and what keeps her inspired to create. Spoiler alert: she’s been behind more of your favorite songs than you realize.

One Performance Idea...

Playing small local shows? Try partnering with another local artist to create a co-headline show! Each of you can play your own set to showcase your music, then come together for a grand finale to perform a song as a team. Collaborating like this not only makes the show more dynamic and memorable, but it also gives you a chance to experiment, learn from another performer, and reach new audiences through each other’s fanbases.

Try it out: Search for local artists who would complement your sound and style that are already playing shows in your area. Go to a show, and start building a relationship with them. If they seem like a good match, pitch them your idea, or suggest working together on a song.

Pro-tip: Take it a step further by inviting other local makers to sell their wares at your show, like illustrators selling prints, stickers, or something more deeply connected to your music. It helps you create a fun, immersive experience, expand your reach, and connect more with your community. You could even try partnering with an artist to create merch specifically for the show!

One Business Tip...

Leave paying for playlists and expensive promo behind in 2025. Success in the music industry happens when talent and hard work meet opportunity, so the smartest move is to be ready for those moments by investing in learning. Money spent on building real skills pays off again and again and never loses value. For you, that might mean picking up a new instrument, learning to record yourself at home, or taking a course on music marketing. Anything that strengthens your craft and gives you more control over your career is a step in the right direction.

Try it out: Take a moment to identify the three skills that would make the biggest difference in your music right now. Start with the one that matters most. When you know what skill you need most, it becomes easier to say no to expensive distractions and yes to investments that actually move you forward.
