Your Weekly Guide to Artist and Business Development

One Business Resource...

Want to know how the music industry really works? Berklee College of Music offers a free “Introduction to the Music Business” course on edX, covering everything from recording agreements and copyright basics to building your brand and organizing live shows. You can take the course for free, or upgrade for a certificate to add to your resume or college applications

Try it out: Sign up here, and be sure to select “audit.” While you can take it at your own pace, we suggest you take it as seriously as if you were sitting in a real classroom. Watch a few videos per day and take notes so you can look back at them later!

One Music Production Tool…

Struggling to nail the exact sound you want, or just want to create faster in the moment? Check out Splice, a royalty-free sample library packed with millions of high-quality loops, one-shots, and even MIDI patterns across every genre and instrument. It’s an indispensable tool for music producers at any level.

One Marketing Tip…

Everyone loves a good TikTok series, so why not start your own? The challenge is to choose something repeatable, interesting, and easy for you to keep up with. Most importantly, make sure you choose something that you will have fun creating! A great series not only keeps your followers coming back, but also lets your personality and creativity shine.

Try it out: Choose a theme like “Mashup Mondays” and brainstorm ways to make it unique and relevant to your music and audience. Come up with a clear, attention-grabbing intro hook for each video, and see how your audience responds.

One Performance Tip…

Want to collaborate with other artists but haven’t found the right opportunity? Create your own collaboration feature by writing a new verse to one of your favorite songs. Get creative and think outside the box.

Try it out: Find an instrumental version on YouTube and ask yourself: Why did I choose this song? What emotion could I deepen? What fresh perspective could I offer?

Bonus: If you like how it turned out, record it and post your version to TikTok for extra social content!

One Performance Idea...

Want to start playing live but don’t know where to start? Open mic nights are low-pressure opportunities to test new material, build confidence, and connect with a supportive community. By sharing one strong song, you get real-time feedback and experience that can sharpen your skills and spark your creativity.

Try it out: Find an open mic night by checking social media, Eventbrite, or Yelp for local cafes and venues. If you’re nervous, bring some friends for support and make it a fun night out!
